Zebby Matthews Called Up to Major Leagues

Local Boy Makes Good

Zebby Matthews, a former baseball standout at Smoky Mountain and Western Carolina, has earned his major league call-up when the Minnesota Twins announced they were bringing him up from their Triple-A affiliate, the St. Paul Saints.

Matthews, a 6-foot-5, 225-pound right-handed pitcher, was assigned to the Wichita Wind Surge on May 6, 2024, but was quickly promoted to the Saints.

The Twins are calling up Matthews to join an injury-plagued rotation. He is expected to make his MLB debut soon.

Matthews was a standout pitcher for Smoky Mountain High School and Western Carolina University. He was drafted by the Twins in the 11th round of the 2021 MLB Draft.

Matthews quickly rose through the Twins' minor league system, posting a 3.20 ERA and striking out 10.5 batters per nine innings in 2023.

The Twins are hoping that Matthews can provide a boost to their rotation, which has been hit by several injuries.

Matthews' call-up is a great story for local baseball fans. He is a talented young pitcher who has worked hard to achieve his dream of playing in the major leagues.

We wish Matthews all the best in his MLB career.
